The Photinia, sometimes called 'Christmas berry', has become very popular in recent years. The photinia is mainly popular in spring because of the white flowers that grow on this plant, attracting many butterflies and bumblebees. The photinia is available as a shrub or as a small tree, is hardy and retains its green color in winter. Different qualities of this plant make it so popular among gardening enthusiasts, such as its red and gold-green leaves in spring.

The photinia and its flowering features

The photinia originally comes from Southeast Asia and the Himalayas. There are over 60 subspecies and it flowers in April, May and June. The plant is sold as a spruce tree or planted as ornamental shrub, and can grow about 250 centimeters tall and 200 centimeters wide. It's perfect for smaller gardens. Because the plant can take pruning quite well, you can prune it into various shapes.

The photinia is a low-flowering plant that retains its green color for a long time. In May, large white flowers give the plant a fresh accent that in fall is replaced with beautiful orange-red berries. The leaves feature a shiny structure and are green color with a pink touch in spring, after which they are immersed in a beautiful red color in fall. The photinia protects itself against sun rays through its red-colored leaves.

Soil requirements

Anyone who wants to see a healthy photinia in his garden must also provide it with the right soil, as photinias have certain soil preferences. This plant preferably takes root on humus-rich and fertile, well-permeable and relatively moist soil. The photinia is happy in the sun or partial shade. Do, however, make sure that the plant is not in a windy spot, especially not in winter. This way, you can prevent frost damage.

The photinia is also an excellent solitary plant that can be planted in sets of 3 to 4 per square meter. In addition, the photinia also looks wonderful in a plant pot or on the terrace. 

Little pruning

Photinias need little to no pruning. If the plants are not pruned, they can reach a height of 3 to 4 meters. However, the plants are very well suited for pruning, so to keep control of its size and shape, you needn't be afraid to use a pair of scissors. In spring, you can remove dead or damaged branches, if you like. Should you choose to prune your photinia, it is advised to do so in winter, when the plant has less leaves.

Thanks to its seasonal colors and features, the photinia is a beautiful addition to any garden or park. The plant will make for a pretty eye-catcher at any time of the year on any location.
